In 1990, the membrane structure of the Olympic Stadium in Rome was suspended from the space frame of the pressure ring. It was light and beautiful, and became the most commonly used model for the roof that spans the auditorium.
The SanNicola stadium designed by RenzoPiano in 1990 used a combination of membrane structure and concrete. In 1993, the Gottlieb Daimler stadium was light and beautiful, and achieved greater rationality and economy than other structures. Early European membrane structures mainly used PVC-coated polyester fiber membranes, while PTFE-coated glass fiber membranes were later used more widely.
Now the membrane structure building has begun to spread all over the world. Among the venues for the 2002 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, 5 out of 10 stadiums in South Korea used membrane structures, while 6 out of 10 stadiums in Japan used membrane structures.
