Tension film is a stable curved surface formed by high-strength flexible film material subjected to tension and compression of other materials, and can withstand a certain external load. Its shape is free, light, soft, full of strength, flame retardant, easy to make, quick to install, energy saving, easy to use, safe to use, etc., so it is widely used all over the world.

The tensile membrane material has no bending resistance, and all the points on it have only 3 degrees of freedom in the analytical model. This feature can actually simplify the cable-membrane system into a space chain rod system with arbitrarily changing lengths, or simplify the membrane into a space mesh composed of finite elements with three or more nodes that can be freely stretched and rotated.

To make the cable and membrane material have the ability to resist external load, tension force must be applied to it in advance to increase the stiffness and reduce the deformation. Because the tension force in the cable-membrane structure has a relatively complex spatial distribution, the magnitude of the applied tension force generally needs to be determined by computer using special design software to find the shape.
